A 30-year-old pregnant woman who worked as a senior government official was discovered dead at her Dwarka house in Delhi. Her family claims that her husband and in-laws harassed her physically and mentally.
Only four months prior, on April 11, Nazia Khanam, an associate section officer in the Defense Ministry, wed Azam Ali Khan. According to officials, she was three months pregnant.
She allegedly told her family shortly after the wedding that her father-in-law, Babar Ali Khan, and mother-in-law, Sameen Nisha, used to beat, abuse, and threaten to kill or expel her.
The victim’s family claims that despite Nazia’s repeated complaints about her husband’s actions, nothing changed.
Nazia’s family received a call regarding her death on August 21 at around four in the morning, stating that she had committed suicide. Her family, however, questioned her death, believing that she had been murdered and that an attempt had been made to disguise the crime as suicide. Tawab Khan, Nazia’s father, urged legal action against her husband, blaming him for her demise.
The victim’s husband told the police that she locked herself in the room after they got into a fight. Nazia was hanging from the window when he later attempted to enter the room. For a post-mortem analysis, Nazia’s body was transported to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.
It hasn’t been done yet, though, because it took some time to record the family’s statement.
The victim’s family has now insisted that the evidence be preserved and that the post-mortem procedure be videotaped.
Based on the post-mortem report, family statements, and evidence found at the scene, the police have filed a case, according to officials.
