Mackay: By the end of the opening day’s play in the second Test against Bangladesh, hosts Australia had reached 165 for eight in their first innings, taking a valuable 101-run lead.

Bangladesh were bowled out for just 64 in their first innings. A total of 18 wickets fell during the day, with 12 of them claimed by two left-arm fast bowlers.

Australia’s Mitchell Starc took six wickets for just 12 runs, while Bangladesh’s Shoriful Islam also claimed six wickets for 35 runs.

Australia suffered a collapse similar to Bangladesh, but Steve Smith (42) and Cameron Green (51 not out) rescued the innings with a crucial 77-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Nathan Lyon was unbeaten on 10 alongside Green.
