Sergio Gor, the US ambassador to India, referred to the Union Territory as “an important part of India” on Wednesday, a clear reference to India’s declared stance on Jammu and Kashmir. Gor traveled to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh for two days after arriving in Srinagar.
“Kashmir is a significant region in India. This is my first time visiting the location.” Following his meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Gor remarked, “It is an incredibly beautiful place.” “We had a very warm meeting and we look forward to building on our relationship,” Gor said to reporters while Omar Abdullah was by his side.
The senior US diplomat, who also happens to be President Trump’s Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, has not visited Kashmir, since Operation Sindoor last year. In light of the region’s increased geopolitical developments, Gor’s visit is regarded as a major US diplomatic engagement in recent years. Omar Abdullah stated that he got the chance to talk about US-India ties with an emphasis on Jammu and Kashmir during the discussion with Gor. “Our meeting was excellent. We got the chance to talk about our two nations’ relationship, with a particular emphasis on what the US can do regarding Jammu and Kashmir. There are obviously certain legacy issues that, over time, we will be working to resolve, but we look forward to taking this conversation further,” Abdullah said.
Abdullah stated, “We are very hopeful and optimistic that the engagement between the United States of America and Jammu and Kashmir will both widen and deepen in the years ahead.” He also noted that Washington, New Delhi, and Srinagar will continue to communicate.
The US travel advisory for the area was one of Gor’s most important comments. The advise for Jammu and Kashmir may be reevaluated, according to Gor, who also stated that Washington periodically reviews its travel advisories.
While he is unable to make a “big announcement” regarding the amendment of the US advise to its residents, Gor praised the better security situation in the Valley and stated that the government might investigate.
“We think that the administration and chief minister in New Delhi have taken some amazing initiatives to maintain this place safer and more secure. Therefore, we will be examining whether the US-recommended travel warning should be lowered,” he stated. “This is a lovely place. I believe that many Americans would be delighted to visit and take in the beauty.”
The administration of Jammu and Kashmir has continued to be concerned about the US recommendation, especially as it looks to draw in more foreign visitors. Efforts to promote the Valley as a secure travel destination for foreigners may be strengthened by a formal relaxing of the advice.
As of present, there has been no announcement on any changes to the US travel advice. However, Gor’s remarks imply that Washington is aggressively looking into the matter. Prior to the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, US diplomats had already been to the area for political purposes. However, Gor’s statement that the area is a “important part of India” and his suggestion that Washington should reconsider its travel recommendation are expected to draw notice in Srinagar and New Delhi.
