On Sunday, August 16, 2026, an Air India Express passenger’s pistol fired accidentally at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi, injuring two persons.
According to a statement released by DCP Gomti Zone, a passenger named Kamlesh Rai, who lives in the Azamgarh district, and his spouse came at the Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport to travel to Mumbai on Air India Express aircraft IX1810.
He had a legal handgun with him. As the weapon and its ammo were being examined during the security check, an unintentional shooting happened, according to the authorities.
Two people were injured when a female security guard was struck in the thigh and a nearby person was struck in the thumb. According to the statement, both have been sent to a private hospital for treatment.
Senior police personnel, including the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Pindra) and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Gomti Zone), as well as other police officials, arrived at the scene after learning about the occurrence.
According to the police, the site is being examined and the relevant information is being collected. According to the police statement, appropriate legal action is being taken in the case.
