Stalin Counters PM Modi’s ‘Crying for Funds’ Jibe; Recalls Modi’s Remarks as Gujarat CM

Tamil Nadu CM challenges Amit Shah to clarify stance on NEET exemption, Hindi imposition, and delimitation affecting state's representation.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday (April 18, 2025) sharply responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remark accusing Tamil Nadu of “crying” for central funds. Reminding the Prime Minister of his own statements during his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr. Stalin defended Tamil Nadu’s requests as legitimate rights rather than mere complaints.

Speaking at a government function in Ponneri, Tiruvallur district, Mr. Stalin addressed Mr. Modi’s comments made in Rameswaram, where the Prime Minister had stated that Tamil Nadu continually complained regardless of central assistance. Mr. Stalin recalled, “With utmost respect, I remind the Prime Minister that it was you who previously stated states are not beggars to seek funds from the Union government.”

Further highlighting Mr. Modi’s past statements, Mr. Stalin quoted the Prime Minister’s own criticisms about alleged partisan funding and parallel governance through Governors during his tenure as Gujarat CM. “When Gujarat faced similar issues, Mr. Modi openly accused the Union government of bias against states ruled by opposition parties. Now, when Tamil Nadu asserts its rights, why label it as crying?” Mr. Stalin questioned.

The Chief Minister emphasized his approach to securing the rights of Tamil Nadu was rooted in dignity and respect, inspired by his political mentor, former CM M. Karunanidhi. “Our demand for funds is our legitimate right—not begging. We do not bow down but extend hands with dignity,” Mr. Stalin asserted.

Responding to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent claim in Chennai that Tamil Nadu’s concerns were diversionary tactics, Mr. Stalin countered, “Tamil Nadu is fighting for rights that benefit all states. Is it diversionary to demand justice? Because of inaction, we approached the Supreme Court against the Governor and secured a historic verdict.”

Directly challenging Mr. Shah, Mr. Stalin asked pointedly: “Can you assure Tamil Nadu that delimitation will not diminish our representation? Can you guarantee exemption from NEET for our students? Will you ensure Hindi will not be imposed on us? Please specify exactly how much financial assistance your government has provided Tamil Nadu.”

Mr. Stalin also questioned why the central government had not clearly addressed these critical issues publicly.

At the event, the Chief Minister inaugurated over 6,700 completed projects worth ₹1,166 crore, laid foundations for another 7,300 new projects, and began distributing welfare schemes benefiting over two lakh residents.

Ministers, MPs, MLAs, district officials, and senior bureaucrats attended the ceremony.
