In Nizhnekamsk, a city in the Tatarstan area deep within Russia, a Ukrainian drone strike has killed at least 13 people and injured 39 more, according to local authorities on Monday.
This is the bloodiest attack to hit the nation in more than two years. More than 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) east of Moscow, Nizhnekamsk is home to a sizable, well developed oil refinery that is comparable to those that Ukraine has often attacked in recent months.
Videos of a massive fire blazing and smoke plumes rising from a location just outside the city, near what appear to be the distinctive towers of an oil refinery, are making the rounds on social media and have been geolocated by news agency CNN. What was hit in the incident is unclear.
The attack occurs as the war’s front lines essentially stall and both Russia and Ukraine step up their aerial operations against one another. The number of civilian deaths has risen and more vital infrastructure is being hit as more drones and missiles get past both sides’ weakening air defenses. According to a recent UN report, June was the bloodiest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022, with 1,396 fatalities and 7,978 injuries.
The Russian Investigative Committee claims that one of the victims in Nizhnekamsk was a youngster. Additionally, according to Alexandr Shuvayev, the acting governor of Belgorod, a region in Russia that borders Ukraine, four more persons have died in the past 24 hours.
As Ukraine’s long-range drone technology has advanced in recent months, it has shown a newfound capacity to regularly attack infrastructure located deep within Russia, including warehouses owned by Russia’s biggest online retailer, Wildberries, as well as oil refineries, tankers, power substations, and other energy infrastructure.
Up to Monday’s attack on Nizhnekamsk, attacks on Wildberries’ warehouses last month claimed the lives of at least eight individuals in a single day, making it the bloodiest Ukrainian attack inside Russia.
Kyiv’s counterattacks are still greatly outnumbered by Russia’s daily aerial assaults against Ukraine. Earlier this month, Russian missiles in the Kyiv area killed at least 17 people and injured dozens more in a single night.
Kyiv is in dire need of assistance from friends to replace its arsenal of US-made Patriot interceptor missiles, which makes such attacks much more lethal.
