Chennai: Bringing an end to months of intense speculation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C. Joseph Vijay’s wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, has withdrawn the divorce petition she had filed earlier this year. The move has resulted in the closure of the case before the Chengalpattu family court.
The decision has sparked fresh curiosity over whether the couple has decided to work on their relationship. However, neither Vijay nor Sangeetha has made any public statement on the reason behind the withdrawal, leaving the developments open to interpretation.
Sangeetha had approached the family court in February 2026, seeking the dissolution of her marriage with Vijay. The petition came as a surprise to many, especially as it surfaced just months after the actor turned politician assumed office as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister.
Over the past few months, the case came up for hearing several times but was repeatedly adjourned. Lawyers representing both sides appeared before the court on most occasions, while Vijay and Sangeetha themselves largely stayed away from the proceedings. With the petition now withdrawn, the legal battle has officially come to an end.
Vijay and Sangeetha were married on August 25, 1999, and have been together for more than 26 years. They are parents to two children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Saasha.
In recent years, Sangeetha’s absence from several important public appearances, including Vijay’s political events, had triggered rumours about trouble in their marriage. Those rumours gathered pace after news of the divorce petition became public earlier this year. Despite the widespread discussion, Vijay chose not to comment publicly on the matter.
Since the case has been withdrawn before any trial on its merits, the court has not ruled on the issues raised in the petition. As things stand, there is no official confirmation of a reconciliation, nor has either side disclosed what led to the withdrawal.
For now, one of the most closely watched personal legal disputes involving a sitting Chief Minister has quietly come to a close, while the couple’s next chapter remains a matter only they can answer.
