Assam Flood Situation Remains Critical, Death Toll Climbs To 89

On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, the flood situation in Assam remained dire, with over 1.22 lakh people still affected across five districts and nighttime showers causing more flooding in low-lying areas. The death toll had reached 89.

During the day, Union Health Minister JP Nadda is expected to visit the flood-affected areas to evaluate the situation and discuss relief and rehabilitation efforts with state officials.

The Dhansiri river in Numaligarh, Golaghat district, was still flowing in a “severe flood situation” on Wednesday morning, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

“Due to the continuous rise in the water level of the Dhansiri at Numaligarh, citizens are advised to stay away from the river,” a spokesperson for the ASDMA stated.

According to the most recent flood advisory from the ASDMA, two more individuals perished in the past 24 hours, one in each of the districts of Sivasagar and Golaghat, bringing the total number of flood-related deaths this year to 89.

Over 1,22,100 people are still affected, with Sivasagar being the most severely affected district with almost 60,000 affected, followed by Charaideo with over 31,000 and Jorhat with almost 20,000.

17,857 displaced individuals are currently seeking refuge in 55 relief camps and assistance distribution centers run by the administration in four districts.

In the impacted areas, rescue and relief efforts were carried out by medical and veterinary teams as well as other organizations.

15,342.92 hectares of agricultural land have been swamped by the floods, and 26,575 domestic animals and poultry have also been impacted.

According to the ASDMA, the flood has seriously damaged roads, embankments, homes, schools, and other public facilities in a number of areas in the state.
