Mumbai School Holiday Today? Here’s the Latest Update As IMD Issues Yellow Alert For Heavy Rain
Mumbai: Students in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar will have to head to school as usual on Monday, with authorities confirming that no blanket school holiday has been announced despite the India Meteorological Department (IMD) placing the region under a yellow alert for heavy rainfall.
The weather department has forecast spells of moderate to heavy rain along with gusty winds across parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. While the alert signals the possibility of adverse weather, it is a precautionary warning and does not automatically lead to schools being shut.
As of the latest update, neither the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) nor the district administrations of Thane and Palghar have issued any order directing schools to remain closed. Educational institutions are continuing with regular classes unless they decide otherwise based on local weather conditions.
Officials have advised parents not to rely on social media forwards claiming schools are shut. Instead, they should keep an eye on official announcements from their child’s school and local authorities, especially if rainfall intensifies during the day.
The IMD’s yellow alert is part of its colour coded warning system, which asks people to stay alert and be prepared for changing weather conditions. School closures are generally considered only if heavy rainfall leads to widespread flooding, severe waterlogging or other situations that could put students safety at risk.
The latest advisory comes as Mumbai continues to witness active monsoon conditions. Several parts of the city and neighbouring districts have received intermittent showers over the past few days, with civic agencies remaining on standby to respond to any rain related emergencies.
Authorities have also urged commuters to plan their travel carefully, as traffic congestion and waterlogging are common in low lying areas during periods of heavy rain. Public transport services are operating normally, although delays cannot be ruled out if rainfall becomes more intense.
For now, schools across Mumbai, Thane and Palghar remain open, and students are expected to attend classes as scheduled. Any decision regarding a holiday will depend on how the weather develops and whether the IMD upgrades its warning or local administrations issue fresh directives.
