Three Talaja Residents Sentenced for Illegally Possessing Peacock Eggs

Talaja: In a case dating back over ten years, the Talaja court has sentenced three residents of Fulsar village to three years of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10,000 each for illegally possessing peacock eggs.
According to the case details, Dhiru Nanubhai Vaghela, Valku Punabhai Vaghela, and Neeru Punabhai Vaghela took five live peacock eggs from a nest and brought them home, mixing them with hen eggs. They allegedly hatched them with the intention of consuming the chicks later.
During the hearing, Public Prosecutor F.M. Sheikh emphasized that the peacock, India’s national bird, is listed under Schedule-1 of the Wildlife Protection Act and is a part of the nation’s legal and cultural heritage. He argued that releasing those who harm such species could threaten their survival and urged for a strict sentence to set an example.
Presiding Judge Chandrashekhar Sharma found the accused guilty and sentenced them accordingly. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional three months of imprisonment for each convict.
