Actor Aamir Khan’s marriage to Gauri Spratt has caused controversy, Uttar Pradesh Shahi Chief Mufti Maulana Chaudhary Ifrahim Hussain has opposed the wedding and issued a fatwa stating that a Muslim man cannot marry a woman from a non-Islamic faith under Sharia.
The comments were made a few days after Aamir and Gauri tied the knot on July 5, 2026, in a private ceremony. Both the actor and his staff have kept mute in response to the remarks.
ANI claims that Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta, issued the fatwa about Aamir’s marriage to Gauri, stating that it was forbidden by Sharia as she is not a Muslim.
The cleric claimed that Islam prohibits Muslim men from marrying non-Muslim women in a video that has gone viral. He went on to say that anyone who entered into such a marriage would be committing a sin and that those who refused to recognize it as such would eventually be held accountable before Allah.
Additionally, the preacher expressed his deep disapproval of Aamir’s third marriage, saying that such couplings damage the reputation of Islam and Sharia.
Since then, the comments have sparked internet debate and elicited conflicting responses from social media users.
The dispute arose shortly after Aamir responded to claims of “love jihad” in relation to his marriage, stating that neither Gauri Spratt, Reena Dutta, nor Kiran Rao had converted to another religion and that his family has always welcomed interfaith relationships. All three of the marriages, according to him, were civil unions.
Gauri Spratt is an entrepreneur from Bengaluru who works in the wellness and cosmetics sector. From her prior marriage, she also had a son.
Aamir had two children, Junaid Khan and Ira Khan, from his marriage to Reena Dutta prior to his union with Gauri. After 16 years of marriage, the couple filed for divorce in 2002. Later, in 2005, he wed director Kiran Rao. Before declaring their separation in 2021, the couple welcomed their son, Azad Rao Khan, through surrogacy in 2011.
