Late on Tuesday, a portion of a residential building’s third-floor balcony fell in the Walkeshwar neighborhood of South Mumbai, killing a 51-year-old man. After an 11-year-old child was murdered when a tree fell on a school van, this was the second monsoon-related death in the city in the previous 24 hours.
According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials, the man, Santosh Ramachandra Bharaskar, was probably standing close to the almost five-decade-old structure on Babulnath Road in Walkeshwar when the balcony fell at approximately 11:30 p.m.
“The victim was initially trapped under the debris, and he was taken to the hospital immediately after that, where he was declared dead,” an official stated.
The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is the owner of the building, according to the authorities.
Concerns regarding the poor upkeep of South Mumbai’s old structures, many of which were constructed between the late 1800s and the 1940s, were rekindled by the tragedy. Over time, their original brickwork, steel members, lime mortar, and timber beams have all severely deteriorated.
Water can infiltrate through walls and roof cracks when it rains a lot. Steel corrodes, timber beams deteriorate, and foundations become weaker as a result. Numerous failures take place during monsoon.
