“Mahesh Bhatt Was Helpless”: Vikram Bhatt Reveals How Just Five Minutes Of Jail Calls Tested Their Bond

Mumbai: Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt has opened up about one of the most emotionally draining chapters of his life, revealing that veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt was left “helpless” during his time in jail and could only stay connected through brief conversation with his children because inmates were allowed only a few minutes on phone calls.
In a candid conversation reflecting on his incarceration, Vikram said the strict communication restrictions inside jail made it nearly impossible to stay in touch with loved ones. While many assumed Mahesh Bhatt’s silence during that period signaled distance or indifference, Vikram insists the reality was very different.
“People misunderstood his silence,” Vikram shared, explaining that Mahesh Bhatt remained deeply concerned but had very limited ways of reaching him. “He could only speak to my children. There were barely five minutes available for calls, and those few moments were usually reserved for family.”
The filmmaker’s remarks shed new light on a relationship that has long extended beyond professional collaboration. Over the years, Mahesh Bhatt has been a mentor and guiding figure in Vikram’s life, making the period of separation particularly painful for both families.
Vikram was arrested in late 2025 in connection with a legal dispute that generated widespread headlines across the entertainment industry. The filmmaker spent several weeks in custody before eventually securing bail. Throughout the controversy, public attention remained fixed not only on the case itself but also on the reaction or apparent lack of reaction from some of the industry’s biggest names.
According to Vikram, however, the circumstances were far more complicated than they appeared from the outside. He said many people expected Mahesh Bhatt to issue statements or publicly defend him, but the veteran filmmaker chose restraint. Vikram believes that decision stemmed from concern rather than detachment.
Looking back, Vikram describes the experience as a life altering lesson. Beyond the legal battle, he says the toughest part was the emotional isolation. The inability to freely speak with family members, friends and colleagues made every day feel longer. Even a short phone call became something to look forward to.
The filmmaker also reflected on how difficult such situations can be for families waiting outside prison walls. While one person serves time behind bars, he noted, loved ones often endure their own emotional struggle, dealing with uncertainty, public scrutiny and helplessness.
Now focusing on rebuilding both personally and professionally, Vikram says the ordeal taught him the value of genuine relationships. And among the lessons that stayed with him, one stands out sometimes silence is not a sign of abandonment it is simply the result of circumstances beyond anyone’s control.
