New Zealand wrapped up a dominant victory at The Oval as Matt Henry produced a devastating spell on the final morning, needing only 31 deliveries to remove England’s remaining five batters. His outstanding performance secured a 253-run win, levelled the series, and delivered the finest match figures of his Test career.
England resumed with slight hopes of producing something special, but those hopes disappeared almost immediately. Joe Root, who had looked rock solid and hoped of extending the contest, once again fell to Henry. After repeatedly testing him throughout the match, Henry delivered another ball that angled in and struck Root in front of the stumps, ending his innings on 77 and effectively closing the door on England’s chase. Henry was rewarded for some very tight and consistent bowling in the channel.
With England already under pressure, the situation worsened within moments. Jofra Archer was beaten by a delivery that stayed low and crashed into his stumps — a reminder of how difficult batting had become on a deteriorating fifth-day surface.
Henry maintained relentless pressure and quickly struck again. Matthew Fisher’s attempt to defend resulted in the ball deflecting back onto his stumps, while Josh Tongue, expecting movement into him, instead edged a straighter delivery to first slip. That wicket marked a personal milestone for Henry, giving him his first ten-wicket match haul in Test cricket.
Fittingly enough, Henry claimed the final wicket himself. Jordan Cox looked to attack with a sweep but was completely beaten by a pinpoint yorker that uprooted the stumps. England were dismissed for 209 in just 58.1 overs, with Henry taking an extraordinary 5 for 3 in the morning session and ending the match with exceptional figures of 11/109.
