Could Your Daily Bread Be Brewing Trouble? Doctor Warns of Rare Condition

A holistic health expert has raised concerns about the potential risks of eating bread every day, pointing to a rare medical condition that could affect some individuals. Dr. Mickey Mehta explained that regular bread consumption might contribute to auto-brewery syndrome, a disorder where the gut ferments carbohydrates into ethanol, mimicking alcohol intoxication.
Dr. Mehta noted that bread, a staple breakfast choice for many due to its convenience and versatility, could pose issues when eaten in excess. Whole grain or multigrain varieties, often praised for their fiber, vitamins, and minerals, are healthier options compared to white bread, aiding digestion and prolonged satiety. However, he cautioned that the fermentation process in the gut, driven by certain bacteria, could lead to symptoms like dizziness, brain fog, fatigue, slurred speech, mood swings, or difficulty walking effects resembling drunkenness.
In severe cases, auto-brewery syndrome can elevate blood alcohol levels to the point of causing legal or health complications, Dr. Mehta warned. He urged moderation, suggesting that people reconsider their daily bread habit to reduce the risk of this uncommon condition.
