In a candid interview, former Indian Premier League chairman Lalit Modi opened up about his past relationship with actress Sushmita Sen, describing himself as her “kept boyfriend” and pushing back strongly against accusations that she was a gold digger.
Modi, who has been living in London, referred to himself as a “diamond digger” during the conversation with Karishma Mehta. He emphasised that their relationship had nothing to do with financial motives, highlighting Sen’s status as a self-made and independently wealthy woman who never pursued money.
“Sushmita is very beautiful, a very well-to-do lady. She has more diamonds than anybody I have known on this planet,” Modi said. “She has done it on her own. There was a time when I went out with her and didn’t have to pay for anything. She paid for everything. I was like a kept boyfriend.”
The businessman praised Sen as a remarkable individual who refused to accept anything from others. He firmly rejected the gold digger label often attached to her, calling such claims completely unfounded.

Modi also recounted the moment four years ago when he publicly confirmed their relationship by posting pictures on social media. According to him, the move came during an argument on a flight. Sen had challenged him not to post the images, but he went ahead anyway. By the time they landed in London, the news had created a massive stir online. Despite the backlash, Modi expressed no regrets, noting that Sen never asked him to remove the posts.
He credited the actress with playing a significant role in his personal growth and described their time together as very special. However, the long-distance nature of the relationship ultimately proved challenging, with Sen’s career based in India and Modi’s life centred in London.
Modi concluded by expressing his fond memories of Sen and wishing her well. He particularly commended her efforts as a single mother to her daughters, Renee and Alisah, calling it remarkable.
The revelations come in the form of an interview originally published by ThePrint, shedding light on a high-profile relationship that once captured significant public attention in the Indian entertainment and sports worlds.
