A Son’s Goodbye: Ajith Kumar Loses Mother Mohini Mani

Chennai: The passing of Mohini Mani, mother of actor Ajith Kumar, at the age of 85 has left the Tamil film industry and millions of fans mourning alongside one of cinema’s most private stars. While the news made headlines across the country, the moment was less about celebrity and more about a son saying goodbye to the woman who stood by him long before fame arrived.

Mohini Mani passed away in Chennai after battling age-related health issues. The loss comes nearly three years after Ajith lost his father, P. Subramaniam, making it an especially emotional period for the actor and his family. Reports said Ajith was in Dubai when he received the news and immediately flew back to Chennai.

As word spread, condolences poured in from across cinema and politics. Kamal Haasan was among the first to express his grief publicly. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, M.K. Stalin, Udhayanidhi Stalin, Edappadi K. Palaniswami and several other political leaders also conveyed their sympathies.

What stood out, however, was not just the messages online but the personal visits. Vijay visited Ajith’s residence in Chennai to pay his respects and offer support to the grieving family. Actress Trisha Krishnan was also seen arriving to meet Ajith and extend her condolences. Several members of the film fraternity, close friends and well wishers visited the residence throughout the day, choosing to stand with the actor during a deeply personal loss.

For years, Mohini Mani remained away from public attention despite being the mother of one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars. Yet those who have followed Ajith’s journey often believe the values he is known for humility, discipline and dignity were shaped largely at home.

In a film industry often driven by noise and attention, Ajith has built a reputation for staying grounded. Many fans now see that quality as part of his mother’s lasting influence. Her legacy is also reflected in the Mohini Mani Foundation, a charitable initiative named after her that continues to support social causes.

As family, friends and colleagues gathered around Ajith during one of the toughest moments of his life, the story became bigger than the loss itself. It became a reminder that behind every celebrated star is a family that shares every struggle, every sacrifice and every heartbreak.
