Lovers from Different Faiths Discovered Hanging in Barabanki, UP

Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district have initiated a probe after discovering the bodies of a young interfaith couple hanging from a tree near Bihura village on Thursday. The couple, identified as Suraj, 21, from Paharpur village, and Nisha Bano, 18, from Bihura, had been in a relationship for four years despite belonging to different communities. According to authorities, societal and religious barriers prevented their marriage, creating significant challenges for the pair who lived just half a kilometer apart.
The two had a history of meeting in a mango orchard the same site where their bodies were found, approximately 200 meters from Nisha’s home and 300 meters from Suraj’s residence. Station House Officer (SHO) DK Singh noted that Suraj worked in farming alongside his father, while Nisha was a college student pursuing her graduation. The couple had eloped briefly a few days earlier but returned under family pressure, and three months ago, Suraj’s family arranged his marriage. Early Thursday, after Suraj’s wife reported him missing around 2 a.m. and a family search proved futile, villagers heading to the fields stumbled upon the grim scene: the couple hanging from a tree with a dupatta and gamchha tied into a noose.
Police swiftly responded, sending the bodies for postmortem and launching a thorough investigation. “At first glance, it appears to be suicide, but we’re not dismissing coercion, threats, or even murder,” said Circle Officer Jagat Ram Kanojia, emphasizing that all angles are under scrutiny. The case’s sensitivity, tied to the couple’s differing community backgrounds, has sparked tension in the village, prompting a heavy police deployment to maintain order. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of this tragic event.
