Rishabh Pant Dropped From ODI Squad, Loses Test Vice-Captaincy to KL Rahul as BCCI Names India Squads for Afghanistan Series

New Delhi: Rishabh Pant has been dropped from India’s ODI squad and stripped of the Test vice-captaincy in the BCCI’s squad announcements for the upcoming Afghanistan series, made on Tuesday, May 19. Ishan Kishan replaces Pant in the One-Day side, while KL Rahul takes over as Test vice-captain.

India ODI Squad vs Afghanistan: Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (vc), KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Prince Yadav, Gurnoor Brar, Harsh Dubey.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma return to the ODI setup. Three players seamers Prince Yadav and Gurnoor Brar, and spinner Harsh Dubey have received their maiden ODI call-ups. Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey have also been included in the Test squad, joined by slow left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, who earns his first Test call-up.

Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the series India’s first international assignments since their 0-2 home ODI series loss to South Africa in November last year.
Among other notable absentees, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel have been left out of both squads. Jadeja and Harshit Rana are recovering from injuries, as is pacer Akash Deep. Of those who featured in India’s last ODI series against New Zealand in January 2026, Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, Ayush Badoni and Dhruv Jurel have missed the ODI cut. Yashasvi Jaiswal has been dropped from the ODI squad, while Devdutt Padikkal returns to the Test side. Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan are back in the ODI setup, with Shreyas Iyer continuing as Gill’s deputy in the 50-over format.
India will host Afghanistan for a one-off Test in New Chandigarh on June 6, followed by three ODIs on June 14, 17 and 20.
