Allegations of EVM Tampering and Voter Intimidation Surface in Bengal Repoll, Says EC Report

A report by the Election Commission, has detailed serious allegations of electoral malpractice during repolling in parts of West Bengal, including claims of electronic voting machine (EVM) tampering and voter intimidation.
According to the report, instances of booth capturing were reported, with polling stations allegedly taken over by groups that prevented legitimate voters from casting their ballots. In some cases, voters were reportedly coerced through threats and intimidation, raising concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.
One of the most striking allegations involved the manipulation of EVMs. The report noted that buttons corresponding to certain political parties were allegedly covered using tape, effectively blocking voters from selecting those options. Such actions, if confirmed, would directly interfere with the voting process and undermine electoral fairness.

In addition to EVM tampering, the report highlighted unusual methods allegedly used to track voters. It claimed that specific scents were applied to identify individuals who had already cast their votes, suggesting attempts to monitor voter participation and possibly influence turnout.
The Election Commission’s findings also pointed to broader concerns about the conduct of polling, including disruptions and irregularities that led to demands for repolling in several booths. Complaints of violence and procedural violations contributed to the decision to conduct fresh polling in affected areas.
These developments form part of a wider pattern of allegations surrounding the West Bengal elections, where political tensions have remained high. The situation prompted heightened scrutiny from authorities, with the poll body emphasizing its commitment to ensuring free and fair elections.
The report underscores the challenges faced in maintaining electoral transparency in high-stakes contests. While investigations into the alleged irregularities continue, the findings have intensified the debate over electoral integrity and accountability in the state.
Overall, the repoll report paints a troubling picture of the obstacles encountered during the voting process, highlighting the need for strict enforcement of election norms and safeguards to protect democratic participation.
