The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has initiated trials of a new nationwide emergency alert system designed to send warning messages directly to mobile phones, as reported by NDTV. The move aims to strengthen India’s disaster preparedness by ensuring timely communication during emergencies such as earthquakes, floods, or other natural calamities.
According to NDTV, many users across the country recently received test SMS alerts accompanied by a distinct alarm sound. These messages were part of a controlled exercise and not indicative of any real emergency. The alerts are being sent through a technology known as Cell Broadcast, which enables authorities to transmit messages to multiple users in a specific geographical area simultaneously without relying on standard SMS delivery channels.
The report highlights that the system is being developed in collaboration with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and other agencies to create a robust, real-time warning mechanism. Unlike conventional messaging, this system ensures that alerts can reach a large number of people instantly, even in situations where network congestion might otherwise delay communication.
Officials clarified, as cited by NDTV, that the alerts are part of routine testing and urged the public not to panic upon receiving them. The objective is to familiarise citizens with the format and tone of such warnings while also evaluating the efficiency and reach of the system.
The initiative is expected to play a critical role in disaster risk reduction by providing early warnings that allow people to take necessary precautions. Authorities are also assessing how different mobile devices respond to the alerts to ensure compatibility across networks and handset types.
As testing continues, the NDMA aims to refine the system for nationwide deployment. The NDTV report underscores that such measures are part of broader efforts to enhance emergency response infrastructure and improve public safety through timely and reliable communication.
