May Bank Holidays: Complete List of Closure Dates

Banks in India will observe several closures throughout May 2026 on account of national holidays, regional observances, religious festivals, and the usual weekly offs, according to the standard banking calendar.

In addition to all Sundays, branches will remain shut on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month as per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines. Customers have been advised to schedule their branch visits, cash transactions, and other in-person services well in advance to prevent any last-minute inconvenience.

The month features a combination of nationwide and state-specific holidays. On May 1, banks will be closed in a wide range of cities for Maharashtra Day, which also coincides with Labour Day (May Day). This marks the formation of Maharashtra state and honours the contributions of workers across sectors. The holiday applies extensively, including in centres such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, New Delhi, and many others.

May 9 marks the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, with closures noted particularly in Kolkata. This date also falls on the second Saturday, reinforcing the weekly off.

On May 16, a State Day holiday will be observed in Gangtok, commemorating regional formation and cultural identity.

May 26 will see banks closed in select locations, including Agartala, for the birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam, recognising the poet’s revolutionary literary contributions.

The major religious festival of Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Bakri Eid, will result in closures on May 27 and, in some places, May 28. This Islamic festival honours Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion and willingness to sacrifice. The exact dates of observance vary slightly by city and region, affecting numerous banking centres across the country, including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jammu, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Srinagar among others.
