Delays, cancellations, crowding hit all lines after Dombivli derailment

Mumbai’s suburban rail network continued to face significant disruptions on Tuesday, a day after an empty local train coach derailed near Dombivli station. The incident triggered widespread delays, cancellations, and severe overcrowding across multiple Central Railway lines, affecting thousands of commuters during peak hours.

According to railway officials, restoration work at the derailment site was still underway, leading to slower train movement on the main Central line. Simultaneously, pre-interlocking work near Khardi impacted services on the Kasara route, further compounding delays. The Harbour line was also affected due to last-minute train cancellations, disrupting schedules across all three corridors operated by Central Railway.

Commuters bore the brunt of the disruption, with many reporting overcrowded platforms and packed trains. Several passengers expressed frustration over repeated service failures, criticising railway authorities for inadequate contingency planning. Many trains originating from Dombivli were either cancelled or delayed, creating a ripple effect across the network and leaving passengers stranded or struggling to board overcrowded coaches.

The derailment, which occurred on Monday morning, involved a coach of an empty local train and caused immediate disruption to suburban services. While no injuries were reported, the incident significantly impacted operations during rush hour. Railway authorities stated that efforts were ongoing to restore normalcy and minimise inconvenience to passengers.

Despite assurances from officials, commuters continued to face difficulties on Tuesday, highlighting the fragile nature of Mumbai’s heavily relied-upon suburban railway system. The cascading delays across routes demonstrated how a single incident can disrupt the broader network, which handles millions of daily passengers.

Central Railway has indicated that repair and maintenance work is progressing, and services are expected to stabilise gradually. However, for now, passengers are advised to expect delays and plan their journeys accordingly as authorities work to fully restore operations.
