Govt Promotes PNG Shift As LPG Demand Rises Amid West Asia Uncertainty

New Delhi: Amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, the Government of India has intensified efforts to expand the use of piped natural gas (PNG) in a bid to reduce dependence on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). According to an official briefing, authorities have stressed that while petrol and diesel supplies remain sufficient, LPG availability continues to require close monitoring.

Speaking at an inter-ministerial press briefing, officials highlighted that oil marketing companies are maintaining stable fuel supplies across the country, with no reports of shortages at retail outlets or LPG distributorships. Citizens have been advised against panic buying, as adequate stocks of essential fuels are available nationwide.

To address pressure on LPG demand, the Centre is encouraging commercial consumers, particularly in urban areas, to transition to PNG. This shift is seen as a practical solution to ensure continuity in fuel supply while reducing reliance on cylinder-based distribution systems. City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies have been directed to actively engage consumers through digital platforms, call centres, and outreach initiatives to facilitate new connections.

In parallel, state governments have been urged to expedite approvals and remove procedural hurdles that delay the expansion of PNG infrastructure. The Centre has emphasised the need for coordinated efforts to accelerate pipeline development and improve last-mile connectivity.

Authorities have also stepped up enforcement measures to curb hoarding and black marketing of LPG and other fuels. Thousands of inspections and raids have been conducted across multiple states, resulting in significant seizures and corrective actions.

Additionally, alternative fuels such as kerosene and coal are being deployed in select sectors to ease immediate demand pressures. Officials reiterated that India’s energy supply chain remains stable and resilient, even as the government continues to monitor developments in West Asia closely.
