Australia: Queensland Bans Children Under 16 From E-Bikes And E-Scooters
The Australian state of Queensland is set to introduce strict new safety regulations that will prohibit children under the age of 16 from operating electric bikes and electric scooters.
Queensland’s state government announced on Tuesday that it has adopted all 28 recommendations from a parliamentary inquiry into the safety of e-mobility devices. A key measure includes banning riders younger than 16 from using e-bikes or e-scooters. Under the upcoming laws, anyone riding these devices must hold at least a Queensland learner driver’s licence for which the minimum eligibility age is 16 to demonstrate basic understanding of road rules.
The parliamentary inquiry highlighted alarming statistics, revealing that 12 people lost their lives and more than 6,300 others suffered injuries in e-mobility-related incidents across Queensland in 2025. In response, authorities will enforce a 10 km/h speed limit for e-bikes and e-scooters on footpaths. Police will also gain enhanced powers to confiscate and destroy illegal devices, along with the authority to conduct random breath tests on riders.
The changes aim to significantly improve safety for all road users and pedestrians amid the rapid rise in popularity of these personal electric vehicles.
