Mumbai Weather Update: AQI Improves But Govandi Hits Hazardous Levels

Mumbai: Mumbai witnessed largely clear skies on March 18, 2026, offering relief from recent weather fluctuations, while overall air quality showed signs of improvement across the city, according to a report by The Free Press Journal. However, despite the broader improvement, certain areas continued to record worrying pollution levels.
Data indicated that most parts of the city experienced better air quality, falling within the ‘satisfactory’ to ‘moderate’ categories. This reflects a gradual improvement in atmospheric conditions, supported by favourable weather patterns and stable temperatures.
However, the situation remained concerning in some pockets. Govandi emerged as a significant outlier, recording a hazardous Air Quality Index (AQI) of 421, placing it in the ‘severe’ category. Such levels are considered dangerous and can have serious health implications, particularly for vulnerable groups.
Other areas also reported poor air quality, though less extreme. Locations such as Sunder Nagar, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, RBI Staff Quarters, and Louis Wadi registered AQI levels ranging from ‘moderate’ to ‘poor’, underscoring persistent localised pollution challenges within the city.
The contrast between overall improvement and isolated spikes highlights the uneven distribution of air pollution across Mumbai. While general conditions may appear stable, micro-level environmental factors continue to affect specific neighbourhoods differently.
Meteorological conditions for the day remained stable, with no significant weather disturbances expected. The clear skies contributed to relatively consistent daytime conditions, although they were not sufficient to uniformly improve air quality across all monitoring stations.
As reported by The Free Press Journal, the situation underscores the need for continued monitoring and targeted interventions in pollution-prone areas. Despite broader gains, the persistence of hazardous air quality in locations like Govandi remains a concern for both residents and authorities.
