Micro-blogging platform X faced a widespread service disruption on Monday (February 16) evening, preventing users in India and several other countries from accessing the platform. Reports of the disruption began emerging late Monday evening, with the issue starting around 7 pm. According to Downdetector, a real-time outage monitoring service, more than 3,000 complaints had been recorded by approximately 7:05 pm. Data from the platform showed that 67% of affected users experienced login problems on the website, while 18% reported issues with the mobile application at the time this report was written.
Possible reasons behind the X outage
- Server-related technical problems
Service disruptions on platforms like X are often caused by technical issues on their servers. This can happen when servers become overloaded or when technical teams are implementing fixes or system adjustments. In such cases, users may find that the homepage does not load or that their feed stops updating. - Heavy traffic on the platform
A sudden increase in user activity can also affect platform performance. When major events or breaking news occur, a surge in traffic can strain servers. Around 7 pm IST, discussions related to the inauguration of the AI Impact Summit 2026 may have contributed to increased traffic, potentially impacting service availability. - Routine maintenance and updates
At times, platforms temporarily limit access while carrying out maintenance, software updates, or bug fixes. Users attempting to log in during such maintenance periods may encounter loading errors or may be unable to access the platform. - Network or DNS-related disruptions
In some cases, access issues may be linked to network connectivity or DNS-related disruptions rather than the platform itself. Problems with internet service providers or network routing can prevent users from reaching the site, sometimes affecting only certain regions or users. - Device-specific technical glitches
Access problems can also be caused by issues on individual devices. Using an outdated version of the app, corrupted cache files, or minor software glitches on phones or computers may prevent the platform from loading correctly.
