India-US Trade Deal : BJP Sharply Attacked Rahul Gandhi As He Accused Government Of ‘Selling Bharat Mata’

New Delhi : The BJP on Wednesday launched a sharp counterattack against Rahul Gandhi over his remarks in Parliament on the India-US trade deal, describing the Congress leader as the “wisest fool in Congressdom” and accusing him of dragging parliamentary decorum to its lowest level. BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said the Leader of the Opposition had lowered the standards of political discourse and parliamentary conduct.

Rahul Gandhi, in a fierce attack in Lok Sabha, alleged that the government had “sold Bharat Mata” through the India-US interim trade deal, describing it as a “wholesale surrender” that hands over India’s energy security to the United States and compromises the interests of farmers. This is complete surrender. It is a tragedy because it is a surrender not just of the Prime Minister. He has surrendered the future of 1.5 billion Indians.

He claimed that under the deal, India’s energy security would be undermined, with the US effectively deciding “whom we buy oil from” and farmers’ interests had been jeopardised and warned that they would face a “storm” as American agricultural products flood Indian markets.Within minutes of Rahul Gandhi’s speech, the BJP launched a sharp counterattack, accusing him of dragging politics and parliamentary decorum to a new low and making baseless allegations.

“Parliament has long been regarded as a symbol of the highest democratic standards. However, today, through the conduct, language and style of the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, a highly condemnable attempt was made to drag politics and parliamentary decorum to the lowest level,” the spokesperson said. There is a certain decorum expected in Parliament. But if one wishes to see street-level language and conduct inside the House, the behaviour of the Congress and other opposition parties speaks for itself, he said.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also hit out at Rahul Gandhi, alleging that the Congress MP makes speeches in Parliament filled with lies and baseless allegations before walking out. “He never stays back to listen to the minister’s reply,” Rijiju said. It is very unfortunate that we don’t have a very serious nature or a person with a serious character befitting the position of the leader of the opposition. Our party has taken a stand that we will counter Rahul Gandhi’s lies outside, but inside the House, a notice will be issued.
