
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed concern over the devastating impact of a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar, with tremors reaching as far as Bangkok. The quake caused significant damage and triggered tremors in several Indian cities, including Kolkata and Imphal.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi assured that India is prepared to extend assistance. “Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand,” he stated.
The earthquake, followed by a powerful 6.8 magnitude aftershock, struck central Myanmar at approximately 12:50 PM local time on Friday. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was located 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing, at a depth of 10 kilometers. While reports of casualties have emerged, no tsunami warning has been issued.
A video circulating online captured the collapse of an under-construction skyscraper in Bangkok’s Chatuchak neighborhood. Reports indicate that 43 workers remain trapped under the debris as rescue operations are underway.
