Tamil Nadu : Estranged Husband Kills Wife In Hostel, Shares Selfie On WhatsApp

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu – In a gruesome act that has sent shockwaves through the region, a man in Coimbatore allegedly murdered his separated wife inside a women’s hostel before capturing a selfie with her lifeless body and posting it as his WhatsApp status, authorities reported on Sunday.
The victim, identified as Sripriya, was employed at a private company in the city and had been living apart from her husband, Balamurugan, following their estrangement. According to police accounts, Balamurugan arrived at the hostel that afternoon, ostensibly to speak with her, but had hidden a sickle in his clothing.
Tensions escalated quickly upon their encounter, leading to a heated dispute. In a fit of rage, Balamurugan is said to have drawn the weapon and inflicted fatal blows, ending Sripriya’s life right there in the facility. What followed was even more macabre: he reportedly snapped a photograph of himself alongside the corpse and shared it online, captioning it with accusations that she had “betrayed” him.

Eyewitnesses from the hostel described scenes of panic as occupants fled the premises amid the violence. Balamurugan, undeterred, remained at the location until law enforcement responded. Officers arrested him immediately, seizing the sickle as evidence. Preliminary inquiries point to Balamurugan’s unfounded suspicions of an extramarital affair on Sripriya’s part as a possible trigger for the assault.
This chilling incident, originating from Tirunelveli where the couple once resided, has reignited fierce discussions on the escalating threats to women’s security across Tamil Nadu. Opposition parties have seized on the case to lambast the ruling DMK administration, alleging a breakdown in public order and inadequate safeguards against violent and sexual crimes targeting women.
In response, representatives from the DMK government and Tamil Nadu police have countered that such tragedies stem from isolated personal grudges, emphasizing their commitment to rapid investigations, stringent prosecutions, and the harshest penalties to deliver justice without delay.
The tragedy underscores the urgent need for heightened vigilance in communal spaces like hostels, where vulnerable individuals seek refuge. As the investigation unfolds, community leaders are calling for systemic reforms to curb the pattern of domestic fury turning deadly.
