India suffer their biggest-ever Test defeat by 408 runs, lose series 0–2

Guwahati: India crashed to a 408-run defeat against world champions South Africa in the final Test here today. Chasing a target of 549, the hosts were bundled out for just 140.

This is India’s worst defeat by runs in their 93-year Test history. Until now, their heaviest loss had been the 342-run defeat to Australia in Nagpur in 2004 — a record that has now been broken.

Sai Sudharsan (14 off 139 balls) and Ravindra Jadeja (54 off 87 balls) offered some resistance against the touring side’s bowlers. Spinner Simon Harmer claimed six wickets, while Keshav Maharaj took two. Muthusamy and Jansen picked up a wicket each.

South Africa have completed a 2–0 whitewash of the series. India have now been whitewashed in two of their last three home series; they lost 0–3 to New Zealand last year.

Under the captaincy of Temba Bavuma, South Africa remain unbeaten in Test cricket.
