Jailed Janata Dal United Leader Anant Singh Wins Mokama
New Delhi : Janata Dal (United) leader Anant Singh, who is currently in jail after his arrest in a murder case of a Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) supporter, has secured a stunning victory in Mokama by a commanding margin of over 28,000 votes. Veena Devi is the wife of Surajbhan Singh, the rival ‘bahubali’ of Anant Singh.
The jailed JD(U) leader, who has won the Mokama seat five times, made his assembly debut in 2005, contesting as JD(U) candidate. Singh retained his seat in 2010 but quit the party five years later. That year, he ran as an Independent and defeated the JD(U) candidate. Ahead of the 2020 election, Singh switched allegiance to the RJD and once again secured his position in the Assembly.
However, Singh, who has 28 criminal cases against him, lost his seat in 2022 after being convicted in an arms case. His wife, Neelam Devi, contested the subsequent bye-election and successfully retained the Mokama seat for the family. Earlier, on November 2, Anant Singh was arrested in connection with the murder of Dular Singh Yadav, a gangster-turned-politician.
