Patna : The Bihar Assembly elections are likely to be held after Chhath Puja, which falls on October 28, between November 5 and 15. The current Assembly’s term will end on November 22, 2025, and the poll panel is required to complete the election process before that date.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar will visit poll-bound Bihar next week to review election preparations and the final voter list. Political tempers flared over the Election Commission’s recently concluded Special Intensive Revision exercise, which saw 65 lakh names deleted from the draft voter roll.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court warned that it would scrap the entire process even after the final voter list is published on September 30 if any illegality is found. Bihar is again set for multi-phase polling. The 2020 elections were conducted in three phases — 71 seats went to polls on October 28, 94 on November 3, and 78 on November 7. Results were declared on November 10. In 2015, polling was spread over five phases.
The NDA, comprising the BJP, Janata Dal (United), and Lok Janshakti Party (Ramvilas), is eyeing another term under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The Opposition camp, led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), along with the Congress and Left parties, is hoping to unseat him. In the 243-member House, the NDA currently holds a majority with 131 members — BJP 80, JD(U) 45, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) 4, and support from 2 Independents.
