On Friday (July 18) night, an accident occurred in the Karjan taluka of Vadodara. A car plunged into a canal as the driver lost control of the steering wheel. Four people were present in the car. The accident claimed the lives of two people, whereas other two got saved.

Apparently, Nareshbhai Patanwadia, Bharatbhai Patanwadia, Hiteshbhai Patanwadia, and Arvindbhai Patanwadia had gone to Sayar village. All four of them are of the same family. At around 9 PM, they were returning to their village Diwalipura, when Hiteshbhai, who was driving, speeded the car near the turning of Narmada canal and lost control of the steering wheel.

Due to this, the car rammed into the canal’s embankment and plunged into the Narmada canal. The car broke the embankment, fell into the canal, and got overturned. The car’s front part got submerged in the water whereas the rear part was above the surface of the water.

Nareshbhai, who was sitting on the back seat, managed to get out as the rear window of the car broke. The fire brigade was called, which started rescue operations after it reached. Meanwhile, locals and other commuters gathered there and helped Nareshbhai to rescue Bharatbhai, who was also on the backseat. Bharatbhai was rescued after opening the back door of the car.

On the other hand, Hiteshbhai and Arvindbhai, who were sitting on the front seats, were found in an unconscious state. They were brought out of the car after much efforts; however, when they were taken to the hospital, the doctors declared them dead. Their bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

Bharatbhai sustained injuries on his chest and in the left eye. He is receiving treatment at the Karjan Government Hospital. The police also reached the spot and registered a case of accident. Primary investigations indicate that speeding and careless driving caused the accident.

Such incidents spark concern about drivers’ behavior on roads, involving rough driving and over-speeding. Highway authorities must take steps such as putting up speed limit signs and constructing embankments which are not dangerous.
