Mumbai: Ola, Uber Strike Leaves Commuters Stranded on Day 3

Mumbai’s transportation woes continued for a third day as a strike by Ola and Uber drivers left thousands of commuters stranded, particularly at airports and railway stations. The protest, which has spread to Pune and Nagpur, has seen nearly 70% of app-based cabs off the roads, severely disrupting daily commutes. Mumbai airport authorities have issued advisories urging travelers to explore alternative transport options before heading out.

The drivers, rallying for better pay, reduced commissions, and protections under new labor laws, plan to escalate their action with a sit-in at Azad Maidan in South Mumbai on Friday. Their demands stem from grievances over low earnings, exacerbated by high app commissions and rising fuel costs, which they say make it difficult to sustain a livelihood.

Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik met with driver representatives earlier this week, but the discussions yielded no concrete resolutions, prompting the drivers to persist with their strike. Sarnaik, expressed frustration, stating, “We explained everything, but the protest is still on. That’s not right.” Until an agreement is reached, commuters are likely to face ongoing disruptions, with no immediate end to the deadlock in sight.
