Mumbai Braces for Heavy Rainfall as Monsoon Intensifies, IMD Issues Alerts

Mumbai is experiencing widespread monsoon rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting an escalation in the coming days. The IMD has issued yellow alerts for July 8 and July 10, warning residents of heavy showers across the city.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that, due to persistent rainfall in the catchment area, three gates of the Middle Vaitarna Dam in Palghar district were opened on Monday afternoon to manage rising water levels. The gates, numbered 1, 3, and 5, are currently raised by 30 centimeters, releasing water at a rate of 3,000 cusecs, according to a BMC statement issued Monday evening, as reported by PTI. Authorities have advised residents to exercise caution, particularly in low-lying areas prone to flooding.

On July 8, Mumbai is expected to see cloudy skies accompanied by moderate rainfall, with the yellow alert signaling the potential for heavier downpours. The forecast indicates that the monsoon will remain active, bringing continued wet conditions to the region. The BMC and other civic bodies are urging residents to stay updated on weather advisories and take necessary precautions to navigate potential disruptions caused by the intensified rainfall.
