BJP Calls for Mamata Banerjee’s Resignation Over Kolkata Law Student Gangrape Case

Kolkata, June 30, 2025 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its criticism of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, demanding her immediate resignation following the alleged gangrape of a 24-year-old law student at South Calcutta Law College on June 25. The BJP claims the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) consistently shields perpetrators in such cases, pointing to a failure to ensure women’s safety in the state despite Banerjee being a female chief minister.

A four-member BJP fact-finding team, comprising former Union Ministers Satpal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb, and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra, departed for Kolkata on Sunday to investigate the incident. The committee, led by Singh, plans to engage with stakeholders, visit the crime scene, and meet the victim’s family to assess the situation. The team will submit a detailed report to BJP National President JP Nadda.

BJP spokesperson Gourav Vallabh sharply criticized the TMC, alleging that the accused are often linked to the ruling party. “West Bengal ranks highest in crimes against women, despite having a woman chief minister,” Vallabh told ANI, accusing the TMC of protecting culprits instead of supporting victims’ families. He reiterated the demand for Banerjee’s resignation, stating it is essential for justice to be served.

The incident has sparked widespread protests across Kolkata, with BJP workers demonstrating outside Lalbazar Police Headquarters. West Bengal BJP President and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, who was detained during the protests but later released, condemned the state government, accusing it of neglecting women’s safety. “The Mamata government is asleep while women suffer,” Majumdar stated.

The Kolkata Police have arrested four individuals, including a security guard, in connection with the case. Authorities have also recovered CCTV footage that corroborates the victim’s account of the assault, which allegedly occurred in the guard room of the college premises. The National Commission for Women has raised concerns, with member Archana Majumdar alleging attempts to conceal details of the case and a lack of police cooperation during her visit to the college.

TMC leaders have faced backlash for their remarks on the incident. The party issued a show-cause notice to MLA Madan Mitra for victim-blaming comments and censured MP Kalyan Banerjee for questioning the government’s ability to prevent such crimes. The TMC clarified that these statements were personal opinions and not reflective of the party’s stance, emphasizing its commitment to seeking the strictest punishment for the perpetrators.

The BJP’s allegations of TMC links to the accused, particularly claims that the prime suspect, Monojit Mishra, is a former TMC Chhatra Parishad leader, have been denied by the ruling party. The controversy has deepened political tensions, with the BJP vowing to continue its campaign against the TMC government until justice is delivered.
