Kolkata law college gangrape case: RG Kar rape victim’s father’s statement

Kolkata — A 55-year-old security guard, Pinaki Banerjee, was arrested on Saturday by Kolkata Police in connection with the alleged gangrape of a 24-year-old first-year law student at South Calcutta Law College in the city’s Kasba area. This marks the fourth arrest in the case, which has reignited public anger and political controversy in West Bengal, drawing comparisons to the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in August 2024.
The incident, which took place on June 25, 2025, inside the college’s security guard room, involved three other suspects Manojit Mishra, 31, a former student and practicing lawyer; Zaib Ahmed, 19; and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, 20 previously arrested within hours of the survivor’s complaint. According to the FIR, the victim was lured to the college under the pretense of discussing a student union position, where she was assaulted between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM. Medical tests confirmed the survivor’s account, revealing evidence of physical trauma, including nail marks and bite marks.
The father of the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder victim has publicly criticized the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-led West Bengal government, alleging its role in enabling such crimes. Speaking to ANI, he expressed frustration over the recurrence of such incidents, stating, “The government has a significant role in this, which is why all these incidents are happening.” He further noted that the three initial suspects are linked to the TMC and urged the party to ensure such crimes are prevented.
The arrests have fueled a political firestorm, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensifying its criticism of the TMC government. BJP leaders, including IT Cell head Amit Malviya, accused the TMC of fostering a culture of impunity, pointing to Mishra’s alleged ties to the TMC’s student wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). Malviya posted on X, calling West Bengal “a nightmare for women” under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. The BJP also shared images of Mishra with TMC leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee, to highlight alleged political connections.

In response, TMC leaders condemned the assault but defended the state’s actions. West Bengal Minister Shashi Panja emphasized the government’s support for the victim and her family, while the TMC criticized the BJP for politicizing the issue. The party also highlighted its proposed Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill as a step toward addressing such crimes.
Kolkata Police acted swiftly, seizing the suspects’ mobile phones to investigate whether the assault was filmed, as alleged by the survivor. The three initial suspects were remanded to police custody until July 1, 2025, following their court appearance on June 27. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognizance of the case, requesting a detailed report from the Kolkata Police Commissioner.
The incident has renewed concerns about women’s safety in West Bengal, particularly on educational campuses, with comparisons to the RG Kar case underscoring persistent challenges. The public prosecutor, Sourin Ghosal, confirmed that medical evidence supports the survivor’s allegations, and investigations continue to determine the full extent of the crime.
