Is Cummins Signalling That He Will Skip IPL 2027?

After a commendable run by SRH in IPL 2026, all players will now focus on national commitments, and Australian skipper Pat Cummins is already stacked with crucial international matches next year. The World Cup-winning captain is considering cutting some of the strain he undergoes by playing franchise cricket.

The year 2027 is going to be one of the busiest periods for the captain, with Australia’s matches heavily scheduled during that time. It will begin with a four-Test tour of India, followed by the 150th anniversary Test against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, an Ashes series, and the prestigious ODI World Cup 2027. Australia had a forgettable campaign at the recent T20 World Cup, as they did not even qualify to play the semis and were knocked out in the league stage itself. The team wishes to escape this disrespect.

Pat Cummins admitted to reporters that he will make some sacrifices to focus on leading his country’s matches. There were no direct mentions of the IPL, but faint hints regarding franchise cricket were conveyed by the skipper. He said, “I will make a call a lot closer and work with the franchise to see what makes sense. Things can change. I’ve had a couple of injuries pop up, so I don’t really want to lock in anything.”

The captain often suffers from injuries and fears that if he strains too much, there is a higher possibility of injury. This happened in the current IPL edition too, where the skipper missed first seven league matches for SRH, with Ishan Kishan acting as an interim captain for those matches filling Cummins’ absence. The next 18 months indicate Cummins’ packed schedule with national matches, and it is a crucial phase for the Australian team as well, as they will look to bounce back from defeats and reshape their current form, aiming to bring back the ferocious legacy of the country’s cricket.
