Iran Slams Trump’s ‘Disrespectful’ Comments on Supreme Leader Khamenei

Tehran – Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday for what he described as “disrespectful and unacceptable” remarks about Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The condemnation follows Trump’s claim that he had spared Khamenei from an “ugly and ignominious death,” a statement that has heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.

In a post on the social media platform X, Araghchi urged Trump to abandon his provocative tone if he is serious about pursuing a nuclear deal with Iran. “If President Trump truly wishes to reach an agreement, he should set aside his disrespectful and unacceptable tone towards Iran’s Supreme Leader, Grand Ayatollah Khamenei, and stop hurting his millions of sincere supporters,” Araghchi wrote.

Trump’s comments were in response to Khamenei’s recent speech, his first since a ceasefire was announced in the Iran-Israel conflict. In that address, aired on Iranian state television, Khamenei claimed that Iran had delivered a “severe slap to the face of America” by attacking a U.S. air base in Qatar. He also accused Trump of exaggerating the impact of recent events, asserting that Iran had emerged victorious in the conflict.

The U.S. president’s remarks, made via his Truth Social platform, included assertions that he had protected Khamenei from assassination, a claim that Iranian officials have dismissed as inflammatory. Araghchi’s response emphasized that such rhetoric undermines efforts to resume nuclear negotiations, a key issue in U.S.-Iran relations.

The exchange comes amid heightened postwar tensions following a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel, which ended with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire on June 24. The verbal sparring between Trump and Iranian leaders underscores the challenges of diplomatic engagement as both sides navigate the fallout of recent military actions and the broader geopolitical landscape.
