Trump Signals Major Trade Deal with India Following China Agreement

Washington– U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the United States has finalized a trade agreement with China and hinted at a significant trade deal with India in the near future. Speaking at the “Big Beautiful Bill” event at the White House, Trump suggested that a major agreement with India could be on the horizon, stating, “We just signed with China yesterday. We are having some great deals. We have one coming up, maybe with India. Very big one.”
Trump did not provide specifics on the recently signed China deal but emphasized that not all countries would secure trade agreements with the U.S. “We’re not going to make deals with everybody. Some we are just going to send them a letter, say thank you very much. You are to pay 25, 35, 45 percent,” he said, indicating that nations not aligning with U.S. trade goals could face higher tariffs. The remarks follow a 90-day tariff pause, with a deadline reportedly approaching on July 9.
Recent developments underscore the momentum toward a U.S.-India trade deal. Earlier this month, U.S.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, speaking at the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum’s Leadership Summit in Washington, expressed optimism about finalizing an agreement soon, noting that both nations have identified terms that work for both sides. Similarly, India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed ongoing negotiations, stating that the two countries are working toward a fair and equitable trade agreement to benefit both economies, as reported by ANI.

The push for a trade deal comes amid recent closed-door talks between U.S. and Indian officials. Bloomberg reported that a four-day negotiation, led by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and India’s trade ministry official Rajesh Agrawal, focused on enhancing market access for industrial and agricultural products, reducing tariffs, and addressing non-tariff barriers.
Trump’s comments align with his broader trade strategy, which includes leveraging tariffs to secure favorable agreements. He noted that the U.S. aims to “open up India” through the potential deal, similar to efforts to expand market access in China.
As negotiations progress, the U.S.-India trade agreement could mark a significant step in strengthening economic ties between the two nations, building on their strategic partnership.
