Canadian University To Launch Course On Diljit Dosanjh Amid His Boycott In India Over New Film Featuring Pakistani Actress

Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) has announced a new academic course focused on the ‘cultural, musical and diasporic relevance’ of Diljit Dosanjh’s work. The course, set to begin in late 2026 at TMU’s The Creative School, will examine Dosanjh’s influence on Punjabi music, global pop culture, and the identity of the South Asian diaspora. The development comes as Dosanjh faces mounting backlash in India over his upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3, which features Pakistani actor Hania Aamir in a lead role.

Several Indian film industry bodies have publicly condemned the collaboration, citing strained relations between India and Pakistan and recent national tragedies, including the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 civilian lives.

Both the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) and the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) have issued statements denouncing the film and its creators. “His preference for Pakistani talent over Indian artists raises serious questions about his loyalty,” FWICE President BN Tiwari told ANI. He added that a formal ban on Dosanjh’s future films and songs was likely.

The criticism extends beyond Dosanjh’s casting of Hania Aamir, as the film also includes other Pakistani actors, such as Nasir Chinyoti and Daniel Khawar. In response, FWICE and AICWA have called on Indian production companies, music labels, and event organisers to cut all professional ties with the artist. “We will approach various industry stakeholders to uphold this patriotic call,” said AICWA.

Meanwhile, supporters of TMU’s new course highlight Dosanjh’s widespread popularity and impact beyond the Indian entertainment industry. The university’s initiative is being viewed as a recognition of his global cultural relevance at a time when he faces growing criticism at home.
