Jamnagar Records 7 Inches Of Rain In 24 Hours: Major Reservoirs Overflow After Torrential Rainfall

Jamnagar: Torrential rain has battered large parts of Gujarat over the past 24 hours, with Jamnagar district in the Saurashtra region recording the highest rainfall in the state, more than seven inches. According to a report from the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC) in Gandhinagar, rainfall was recorded in 165 talukas across 33 districts of Gujarat within the last day.

Jodia taluka in Jamnagar received the heaviest downpour, followed by Mendarada in Junagadh, which reported six inches of rainfall. Several other regions also saw significant rainfall, including Palsana in Surat, Kaprada in Valsad, Amirgadh in Banaskantha, and Vanthali and Keshod in Junagadh, each receiving more than five inches.

Gujarat’s overall seasonal rainfall now stands at 18.61% of the average, according to SEOC data released today. The impact of the rainfall has been particularly significant in Jamnagar district, where water levels in major reservoirs have surged due to continuous inflow. Several dams have reached or are nearing full capacity, prompting authorities to issue alerts to villages in low-lying areas.

Ranjitsagar Dam in Jamnagar taluka has filled completely and is on the brink of overflowing. Local authorities have warned residents in nearby villages to stay alert and avoid visiting the dam site. Phulzar-1 Dam in Kalavad taluka has also reached 70% capacity, and warnings have been issued to the surrounding villages of Khandhera, Nagpur, Ghoraniya, and Vodisang.

Sapda Dam in the same district is holding water at 70% of its total capacity. As a result, villagers from Sapda, Moda, Gangajala, Aliyabada, Shekhpat, Khijadiya, Dhuwav, and Khimrana have been advised to exercise caution and refrain from traveling near the dam. Similarly, the Rangmati Dam has reached 80% of its capacity, leading to safety advisories for the residents of Changa, Chela, Dared, Nava Nagna, Juna Nagna, and Navagam Ghed.

With forecasts suggesting the possibility of continued rainfall in parts of Gujarat, state authorities are monitoring the situation closely. Irrigation and emergency response teams remain on high alert, especially around key reservoirs, to prevent potential flooding and ensure the safety of residents in vulnerable areas.
