Gujarat Weather : Monsoon Triggers Red Alerts Across India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for heavy rainfall in 20 states, including Bihar, Gujarat, West Bengal, Rajasthan, and Delhi-NCR, as the southwest monsoon intensifies. The weather agency warns of severe downpours that could disrupt daily life and infrastructure in these regions.

The monsoon has already covered 75% of India, bringing heavy rain to Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand. Eastern Uttar Pradesh is expected to face significant rainfall today, with 13 districts under alert. The IMD forecasts continued showers in Madhya Pradesh until June 25, while Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh are braced for intense rain on June 19 and 20. Extremely heavy rainfall, exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours, is anticipated in isolated areas of Gujarat, North Konkan, and Madhya Maharashtra on June 19, according to the IMD.

In Gujarat, torrential rains have caused widespread flooding, with roads in Gandhinagar submerged and vehicles stranded. Bhavnagar has seen streets turn into rivers, with scooters, autos, and tempos swept away by strong currents. The IMD has also reported waterlogging and flood-like conditions in several districts, including Botad and Bhavnagar.

Ranchi’s district administration has ordered school closures on Thursday as a precaution against the heavy rainfall expected in Jharkhand. The IMD notes that a low-pressure system over Gangetic West Bengal is driving the severe weather, likely moving toward Jharkhand and exacerbating conditions.

The monsoon’s rapid advance is expected to bring rain to more parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh in the coming days, offering hope for agriculture but raising concerns about potential disruptions.
