Jungkook of BTS Issues Apology Amid Controversy Over ‘Make Tokyo Great Again’ Hat

BTS member Jungkook has issued a public apology after facing backlash for wearing a hat emblazoned with the phrase “Make Tokyo Great Again” during a rehearsal for J-Hope’s concert at Goyang Stadium. The slogan, reminiscent of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign phrase, stirred controversy due to its association with nationalist sentiments in Japan, particularly linked to Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko and anti-Korean rhetoric. The incident occurred during Jungkook’s first public appearance since his military discharge earlier this week, coinciding with BTS’s 12th anniversary celebration at the 2025 BTS Festa.
South Korean fans expressed disappointment, criticizing Jungkook’s choice as insensitive given the historical tensions between South Korea and Japan. In a statement posted on Weverse, Jungkook expressed regret, admitting he was unaware of the slogan’s political and historical implications. “I sincerely apologize for the disappointment and inconvenience caused to many people,” he wrote, acknowledging his carelessness and noting that the hat had been discarded.

The controversy unfolded as Jungkook joined J-Hope for the finale of the Hope on the Street world tour in Seoul. Photos from the rehearsal, which also revealed a new swallow-like tattoo on Jungkook, fueled online discussions. While some fans defended the singer, arguing the hat was a fashion choice without political intent, others emphasized the need for greater awareness. The incident has sparked debate amid BTS’s ongoing celebrations, with six of the seven members now discharged from military service, heightening anticipation for a potential full-group comeback.
