Mumbai Monsoon News: Heavy Rains Pound City, Flooding In Bandra & Kings Circle; Aviation & Railway Affected

Mumbai: The financial capital experienced torrential rainfall on Monday as the southwest monsoon swept across the metropolis, triggering significant flooding and transport disruptions. Residents awakened to relentless downpours, with vulnerable zones including Kings Circle, Bandra, and Andheri experiencing substantial water accumulation after overnight precipitation. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast additional rainfall throughout Monday.
Flooding and Storm Activity
Video footage from various Mumbai locations showed motorists attempting to traverse flooded streets while pedestrians battled through strong winds and persistent rain with umbrellas. Thunder and lightning activity was documented near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) during the early morning period.
Railway Operations Disrupted
Mumbai’s crucial suburban railway network, essential for millions of daily travelers, experienced delays across all three primary corridors Central, Western, and Harbour lines. Central Railway services are currently operating 15 to 25 minutes behind schedule, particularly on the Kalyan-Kasara sector due to track flooding.
While railway authorities reported no fresh disruptions on Monday, ongoing delays persist. “Suburban services are experiencing approximately 8–10 minute delays due to poor visibility from persistent rainfall,” stated Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer. Conversely, Western Railway officials confirmed normal operations on their network.
Aviation Services Impacted
Air transportation faced similar challenges, with reduced visibility at Mumbai airport causing flight postponements. SpiceJet released a passenger alert via social media platforms, cautioning travelers about possible delays and recommending they verify flight information through the carrier’s official website.
Weather Forecast
The Regional Meteorological Centre predicts Mumbai will experience severe rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning over the following 3–4 hours. Wind gusts reaching 50–60 kmph are anticipated in select areas of the city.
Monday’s temperature range is projected between 23 and 31 degrees Celsius. The IMD forecasts persistent rainfall and overcast skies for upcoming days.
Premature Monsoon Onset
Maharashtra officially received the monsoon on May 25, approximately ten days ahead of the typical schedule. IMD meteorologists confirmed that by Sunday evening, monsoon conditions had reached Dapoli in Ratnagiri district and were progressing rapidly northward.
