Maharashtra Sees Surge in COVID-19 Cases, Mumbai Leads with Highest Numbers

Mumbai: Maharashtra reported 47 new COVID-19 cases , with Mumbai recording the highest number at 25, according to the state health department. This uptick follows a period of low case numbers, with the state having logged only 106 cases since January 1, 2025. The recent rise is part of a broader increase in infections across Asian countries, including Hong Kong and Singapore.

Pune reported seven new cases, all classified as mild, while Nagpur and Thane each recorded five cases. No fatalities were reported, and health officials noted that most infections remain mild, primarily affecting vulnerable populations. The state health department is intensifying testing efforts, focusing on Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) surveys to monitor and control the spread.

Authorities are urging at-risk groups to maintain precautions, such as wearing masks and practicing hand hygiene, to curb transmission. The Union Health Ministry emphasized that India’s overall case count remains low, with 2,075 active cases nationwide as of Tuesday. Mumbai’s active case count stands at 101, prompting heightened vigilance in the city.

The ministry also recommended influenza vaccination to prevent co-infections, particularly among the elderly and those with comorbidities. The officials are closely monitoring the situation, with no immediate plans for widespread restrictions but a focus on targeted measures to manage the surge.
