Jd(U) Candidate Anant Singh Arrested in Jan Suraaj Worker’s Murder; Ec Orders Transfers Amid Mokama Poll Violence

Anant Singh Arrested News: Patna Police arrested former MLA and JD(U) candidate from Mokama, Anant Singh, early Sunday in connection with the death of Jan Suraaj worker Dular Chand (Dularchand) Yadav during campaigning on Thursday. Officers detained Singh from his Barh residence and took him to Patna for questioning, alongside two others Manikant Thakur and Ranjeet Ram who were present at the scene.

According to officials, the post-mortem found no gunshot injury; Yadav died from shock due to a ruptured lung and multiple rib fractures caused by a hard, blunt impact. Police said preliminary investigation indicates a murder case following a clash between rival supporters, with FIRs filed by both sides and Singh named by the victim’s family.

A late-night briefing by Patna SSP Kartikeya Sharma and District Magistrate Thyagarajan S.M. confirmed the arrests and said more action is likely after analysis of evidence and eyewitness accounts. Singh, a multiple-term former MLA whose wife Neelam Devi currently holds the Mokama seat, also faces a model code case over large cavalcades during the campaign.

Three FIRs have been registered one by Yadav’s grandson naming Singh and four others, a counter-complaint by the rival side, and another by police. Singh has alleged a conspiracy by former MP Suraj Bhan Singh, husband of RJD candidate Veena Devi, claiming their vehicles were attacked and the rival faction engineered the situation to implicate him.

The Election Commission has sought a detailed report from the District Election Officer and ordered immediate administrative changes, including transferring the Patna SP (Rural) and replacing key Barh subdivision officials (one returning officer and two SDPOs). Disciplinary action was initiated, with one officer placed under suspension, as authorities moved to reinforce law-and-order and model code compliance.

Jan Suraaj candidate Priyadarshi Piyush welcomed the arrest but said it should have happened sooner, noting the accused continued public campaigning despite an FIR. Security has been tightened across Mokama and adjoining Barh areas, with police instructed to prevent further clashes as Bihar votes on November 6 and 11, and counting takes place on November 14.
