BMC Issues 28-Point Action Plan To Curb Air Pollution in Mumbai

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has rolled out a comprehensive 28-point directive targeting air pollution across Mumbai and its surrounding areas. While several pollution control measures are already in place, the civic authority stated that these new guidelines will tighten oversight on dust and emissions, particularly from building and infrastructure projects.

Construction sites have been pinpointed by the BMC as primary sources of airborne dust. The updated norms prohibit contractors from using firewood or other smoke-producing fuels for cooking at worker accommodations. Builders are required to prevent dust dispersion from their sites and maintain adequate sanitation and safety standards for laborers.

All construction zones must now install dust suppression equipment, including water sprinklers, fogging units, and barriers standing at least 25 feet tall where necessary. The civic body has banned open stockpiling of sand, earth, and construction waste, mandating that all such materials remain covered or stored in enclosed spaces. Roads, pavements, and surrounding public areas near project sites must be kept dust-free at all times.

Vehicle upkeep has also been emphasized under the new framework. Every vehicle hauling construction materials must carry a valid pollution certificate. The BMC has specified that trucks transporting rubble or earth must be completely covered to avoid material spillage during transit. Before exiting any site, vehicle tires must be cleaned to prevent dust from being tracked onto public roads.

On the monitoring front, the corporation has made it compulsory for large-scale projects to deploy sensor-driven air quality monitoring systems. Any exceedance of pollution thresholds must be flagged immediately, with corrective measures implemented without delay.
