
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Nidhi Tewari, a 2014 Batch Indian Foreign Service officer, as the new Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as officially announced by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT).
Tewari has been serving as Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) since November 2022 and previously held the role of Under Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs’ Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division. According to a DoPT memorandum dated March 29, her appointment is effective immediately.

Before her tenure at the PMO, Tewari cleared the Civil Services Examination in 2013 and worked as an Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi while preparing for the exam. In her recent role as Deputy Secretary, she operated within the ‘Foreign and Security’ vertical, reporting to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, with responsibilities covering foreign affairs, nuclear energy, security issues, and matters pertaining to Rajasthan. Her three-plus years of experience in the PMO have prepared her well for this significant responsibility.
